Hello @whattheythink , What To Think about #OmniChannel at IPEX2017 ?

Expanded tweet as some space required. I am getting back to blog mode re print after some time away.

I notice there is no sign yet of @whattheythink at IPEX. I have found a tweet linked to a Ricoh press release.

So headline for day one something like this is not the IPEX we might expect.

Headline for day two needs to explain what happens next.

I did a LinkedIn post on what happened to Cross Media as a term ?

My impression was that it did not make the same impact now as at the time of the previous IPEX.

Gee Ranasinha ( @KEXINO on Twitter ) told me that the current marketing term is "OmniChannel" .

I have tried to check this out. seems to be about retail as well as media but maybe online they mix up anyway.

Google check found his info is sound.

Cross Media still used at print shows, such as The Print Show recently in Telford.

Also found on @whattheythink, Jennifer Matt in 2016.

But I suggest #omnichannel could be a future term. I tried out Adobe Spark as a way to get thought down below a minute. Conclusion is that even if several words mean the same thing best to use the ones people already understand or think they do.

Continues at IPEX and online. Will check @whattheythink on Twitter

By the way The Print Show at Telford seemed fairly solid as an annual event for UK only.  My guess is that IPEX could develop into something different, maybe more discussion and a wider scope. To include #OmniChannel with explanation. Not sure how often, three years is a long time for software.

Continuing what happened to Cross Media?

I did a post on LinkedIn recently after LikeMinds in Exeter. Jason Miller from LinkeIn surprised me by announcing that the "best bits" of the online marketing blogs are now available in a print magazine. Intended as quarterly. This reminded me about "Cross Media" but I could not find any recent links. So I wonder what has happened and how it is described.

There has been one comment, from Gee Ranasinha-

I think for most marketers 'cross channel' has morphed into today's 'mot du jour': omnichannel".
I understood cross-channel to mean repurposing content originally designed for one channel, into another. Creating a print ad, email newsletter and landing page for the same campaign, for example. For me the "omnichannel' approach is taking a more holistic view of content - i.e. not 'imposing' (if you'll pardon the printing pun) a potentially restrictive structure on content until it's destined for output. It comes from a position that most customers navigate across numerous touchpoints prior to purchase.
An omnichannel approach ostensibly places higher value on customer experience, with a network of channels working together and interdependently, with the goal of a more consistent (and hopefully positive) brand experience.

This makes a lot of sense. I will check out how it connects with the Print Show in Telford and IPEX at the NEC.

Benny Lambda and the threat to books and newspapers. Yesterday at IPEX Benny Lands repeated an argument from interview with Digital Printer - books and newspapers are only 80 billion dollars of an 800 billion dollar industry. So although there is a threat from the internet there is still plenty left. No objection from Frank Romano so ,maybe this is now accepted. Comment welcome.

Haymarket hangs on to hard copy Printweek in India

I am a bit late with this news. Haymarket has sold the UK apsect of Printweek to the Mark Allen Group. I had thought they might take it online but instead the new direction is as a fortnightly. My first impression is that the new context is not as web friendly as much of Haymarket. There is a significant base in journals. But it seems the website will continue. The Indian version of Printweek however stays with Haymarket. This may because they see a longer term future for print until bandwidth catches up. Not sure if they have a title about mobile devices. Printweek started in 1958 according to the Printweek India website. So it must have been fairly central to Haymarket at the time. At first it was called Lithoweek, then litho became assumed. According to the Wikipedia "Haymarket Publishing , due to its growing presence in online media and live events, was rebranded as Haymarket Media Group in 2007". Without Printweek as a UK brand the London offices will presumably continue to move online and adjust their editorial views on the future of print. But not in India. Even though they know more than most about how to format an e book , there is still a future for print. If you have half an hour listen to Mark Coles on newspapers, part of a series on media. Scroll down to 11th June. What will this mean for IPEX 2014 ? London media conversation is moving towards Cross Media though print is still part of this. The global aspect will be more interesting than ever. Some reason must be on offer not to wait for a print show in Mumbai.

3D Printshow, my comment on Repost

Previous post selected from suggested links sent to me as email. I guess as long as the right words are in this blog then the relevant news will turn up. The 3D shows are in different places but before March next year so part of the approach to IPEX. So the time aspect makes sense if you think that IPEX has started. Here in Exeter we have already had several 3D items and one complete show as art in the Phoenix Arts Centre. On the Wild Show, Phonic FM, we have had guests explaining the technology including scanning objects. So we will probably come back to this. The hellospidersblog may go off topic in IPEX terms. One idea is to scan the Colston Hall in Bristol and move a scale clone to Exeter bus station. Anyway back to Repost. This is working ok.

Repost, translation of Konica Minolta, seems to be about measuring colour in 3D

More comment about this on Hello Spiders dotcom. The post from repost worked ok unless you don't understand Spanish. I got an email this morning with suggestions based on the content of the two blogs I have linked to Repost, this one and Hello Spiders. So spiders, listen up. This is ok. Konica Minolta will definitely be at IPEX 2014. This news is definitely Cross Media. Search on terms related to Cross Media also welcome. Not sure if the spiders respond to bold type. Updating this blog for 2014 , reposting stuff, scope of Cross Media

Jeff Jarvis on Buzzmachine has done a demo of how to use Repost so I am trying it out. The instructions for Squarespace are a bit confusing so I am concentrating on Blogger for now. ( hellospiders.com has a wide scope)

This blog continues as IPEX 2002 which may be a decade or so too late, or may be a year too soon. I still think things are moving quickly. Also the IPEX event is getting significant not just for the companies that will be there but also for the ones that won't. Apple and Adobe seem a good place to start. More later.

Meanwhile I am exploring Exeter and city walks. see hello spiders for updates. I hope to document a walk from King's Cross to Islington Green to the Olymic Site then to ExCEL. Mostly by canal or river. The final bit is still vague. It may be just imagined in Exeter at the moment. Getting from King's Cross to Islington Green is clear enough so no problems before the Cross Media event. ( apart from how to link to the Elephant and Castle. Not sure of the dates for the LCC Futures )

So next post, plan A is to link to other sources.

Scope of Cross Media just the same as IPEX but at another time, to be determined.

Trade shows still part of Blended Learning @Bett_show @Ipex_World

(Posterous seems not to be working today. so this is reposted here. Maybe more cross posting later.Running 10 years late makes the point that this year could be as good a a couple of years into the future as an occasion to think about print in context)

Learning can be analysed by academics but is also part of normal life. The word has a simple meaning for most people. So a lot of things can relate in the same blog post.

BETT is a tech show. Now moving to ExCel, it was the last big computer show at Olympia. It continues even though teachers are using Twitter and soforth. I will know more about blended learning when the MOOC course is happening. The topic may come up at BETT. There is still some benefit in "real time and space". Feel free to discuss online of course. The people at BETT will have already decided to be there.

IPEX has also decided to move to ExCel from Birmingham. (ExCel is in East London not far from the Olympic Park) But the exhibitors are cancelling. Jeff Jacobson wrote in a Xerox blog -

In times of change and transformation, one is given the unique opportunity to look at things differently – to step out of the comfort zone and take a different look at how things get done.

which means that the stand is cancelled. In reply to a comment he added

there are international trade shows, such as Hunkeler, which we will attend due to its continuous feed focus – an important offering to our customers and the industry. It is also our intent, at the current time, to participate in Drupa.

So drupa is looking strong as a special occasion once every four years. Heidelberg and HP have already cancelled for IPEX in 2014.

However there could be a gap around drupa for Cross Media Live, a show launched last year in Islington. This is intended to happen every year, more suited to the pace of digital developments. I hope this year that the Furures Conference organised by the London College of Communications will be at the same time and with nearby locations. But online this year is much like last year. The move from print to print as part of communication has taken decades. Print changes over centuries. So we can blog about LCC Futures 2012 as if it was 2013.

BETT though is to be considered day by day. I still don't know what Michael Gove has to say about it. Adobe will not be there, they   left most trade shows a while ago. The Serif stand looks interesting, volume licences for a suite of software once known as dtp.
